SOLER Curriculum Foundations

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) is an important component of every student’s education. Research has shown that curricula and programs that explicitly teach social skills and address the emotional needs of students translate into improved outcomes for academic performance.

The Collaborative for Academic, Social and Emotional Learning (CASEL) has identified five skill domains of social and emotional learning that need to be addressed in a SEL curriculum. These five interrelated domains are considered central to social and emotional learning. SOLER provides instruction that directly connects to each of these domains and lays the foundation for students with special needs to learn SEL skills. Many of the skills taught in the SOLER curriculum are threaded across multiple domains to create a positive foundation for learning. The chart below shows the relationship between the SOLER curriculum areas and domains identified by the CASEL project.

Who is it for?

The SOLER (Social Learning and Emotional Regulation) curriculum is a comprehensive social skills curriculum for students with autism and other social learning challenges. The curriculum can be used with elementary students and taught in small groups or one-on-one settings. Through evidence-based lessons and a scope and sequence that provides scaffolded learning opportunities, teachers can provide students targeted instruction in social skills. SOLER has three leveled units, moving from basic foundational social skills toward more complex social skills.
