Understanding Social Rules - Links Lesson 126

Social skill instruction is an important component of a comprehensive curriculum for students with Autism Spectrum Disorders.   Instruction embedded within natural routines can be effective and provide students with the opportunity to practice appropriate social skills in the “real world.” However, many students will also benefit from pre-teaching, outside of the context of the routine for initial skill acquisition. For many students with autism, learning social rules can be easy. By introducing each rule in photos, and providing visual examples of both instances and non-instances of the rule, students can become confident in their understanding and performance of these rules.  Once the student has mastered several rules in a structured teaching setting, generalization can then occur during role playing, simulations and throughout daily routines. Below is an example of a lesson plan from the Links Curriculum: Understanding Social Rules.
