Joyful Connections: Inclusive Strategies for the Holiday Season

The holiday season often brings moments of joy, festive traditions, and opportunities to connect with others. For some, it’s a time of celebration, while for others, it simply marks a shift in routines and environments. These changes can feel overwhelming for autistic learners, but with thoughtful planning and inclusive strategies, families and educators can help create a season that feels calm and meaningful for everyone.

Holiday Season Planning

A little preparation can make a big difference, especially when daily routines and environments are inconsistent. Setting clear expectations and planning ahead helps reduce anxiety and create a sense of security for everyone!

  • Keep familiar routines where possible: Even small consistencies, like bedtime or morning rituals, provide comfort during busy days.
  • Preview upcoming changes: Use visual schedules like the Routine Essentials Time Schedule (English | Español) to explain what’s coming next and reduce uncertainty.
  • Talk about feelings: Invite students to share what excites them and what feels hard during this season. The “Feelings Galore” discussion story (English | Español) is a great tool for helping students name emotions.
  • Plan for sensory needs: Create quiet spaces with soft lighting, offer noise-canceling headphones or preferred music, and keep calming items like fidgets or weighted blankets nearby.
  • Practice safety skills: Role-play how to stay safe in crowded places or unfamiliar settings.
  • Prepare for travel: Simulate trips to new environments and check out STAR’s Autism Annex podcast episode “Traveling Different” for expert tips.

Interest-Driven Holiday Fun

Holidays are more meaningful when activities reflect individual interests and allow choice. Empower students to participate in ways that feel comfortable and fun.

  • Offer options: Use this choice wheel from Routine Essentials (English | Español) to let students decide how they want to engage with new foods. Let student interests guide engagement where possible.
  • Celebrate traditions creatively: Encourage students to share their family traditions with the Family Traditions Poster (English | Español) through art, writing, or photos.
  • Explore global celebrations: Explore and research holidays around the world from different cultures to help students learn about diverse traditions and foster inclusion.
  • Support engagement at home: Share STAR’s Fun With Family Home Supports visuals to guide caregivers in creating playful, engaging home experiences.
  • Use visual supports for social connection: Tools like the "Video Chat” Sequence Strip (English | Español) help students practice virtual visits with friends or relatives during breaks to stay connected.

Winter Transitions

Seasonal changes—school breaks, weather shifts, and new routines—can feel disruptive. Thoughtful strategies make these transitions smoother.

  • Communicate openly: Ask questions like “What are you excited about?” or “What feels tricky?” to build trust and understanding and inform ways to incorporate interests and motivation during transitions.
  • Practice social skills: Reinforce greetings, turn-taking, and conversation starters for holiday gatherings.
  • Stay flexible: While routines matter, allow room for adjustments and celebrate small successes during transitions.
